BRAINERY

Everything you ever needed to know about Spirulina
.. and more!

Despite being around for eons, there’s not much (scientific) information on Spirulina. That’s mainly because there haven’t yet been enough studies proving its many benefits—and the ones that have shown positive results have not had enough participants to earn them FDA credibility.
We created the Brainery as a resource for you, the spirulina lover, that would enjoy educating oneself with more in-depth knowledge. From scientific papers to links from our fellow algae friends.

Can spirulina boost the immune systems of athletes?

May 2, 2018

Strenuous exercise regimes of high-performance athletes may actually have a negative effect on their immune systems, resulting in an increased vulnerability to infections, such as those of the upper respiratory tract. Since reducing exercise levels is not an option for these athletes, one possible route to maintaining immunity may lie in the use of supplements.
With this idea in mind, a group of researchers in Poland investigated whether taking spirulina as a supplement could maintain the immune systems of top athletes.

Japan for Sustainability reports that Osaka City University announced on April 25, 2018, that it succeeded in developing a new biofuel cell system with the functions of a solar cell and the ability of carbon dioxide conversion. Utilizing the photosynthesis function of spirulina, this solar-light driven biofuel cell generates electricity by consuming CO2 in water as source material and produces formic acid as a byproduct while generating electricity.

Growing oxygen from spirulina in space

January 1, 2018
algaeindustrymagazine.com

Though the International Space Station is regularly restocked by cargo vessels, like today’s Dragon, self-sufficient spaceflight in the future will require us to recycle and reuse precious resources like oxygen. An experiment in space will soon look into doing just that.
Researchers are studying how photosynthesis — the process by which organisms convert light into energy, producing oxygen as a byproduct — takes place in space. This pilot project is the first of its kind, and its researchers and engineers hope to follow it up with a longer study that continuously feeds in microalgae.
